  • Benefits & Living In Airbnbs

    Is this allowed?

Can you claim housing benefit living in airbnbs if costs are lower than the rental or mortgage market?

I heard you can claim housing benefit if your residence is a boat home or caravan why not airbnb?

I don't think so.* AirBnB by their very nature are Bed and Breakfast Holiday Accommodation, so they would not fall under the Supported and/or Temporary Accommodation through your local authority.

Because they are holiday lettings, you will find it highly unlikely that you would be offered a tenancy agreement.* Why, because the risk of having the property wrecked and/or a tenant who will not vacate the premises or willl not pay rent is too great

People who live on boats usually have ground rent that is payable for Mooring and those living in Caravans usually do so in Council run caravan sites for Travellers.* Normal Short term holiday caravan sites do not qualify for housing benefit as in order to be resident in one, you need to live there all year round and also pay ground rent and council tax.

I read an article about this weeks before!
        The article says:-

" All mortgage products are unique really, so unfortunately there’s not one answer to this question. The best thing to do would be to contact your lender or the team at Portico Finance who can fully review your circumstances and what options are available to you. In most cases, an existing residential or buy-to-let lender would not be comfortable with the property being rented out through Airbnb or for the tenants to be on anything but an AST.
However at Portico Finance we have access to lenders who do take a different view and can arrange a bespoke mortgage based on a property being a full-time Airbnb property, or just an occasional Airbnb rental".
