In that case their files will have been sequested by the SRA who will pass them to another firm. Contact the SRA & ask who's taken them over ALSO tell them about this paralegal who's refusing to help

Also forgot to mention that even if they are now closed they will still be insured (run off) meaning you can still claim compensation for their negligence

The last contact with the paralegal was when they were going to appeal the decision with the FO (over the whole amount being used to write the debt off which left me with a bill we could not pay) 14/15 months ago.
We have not heard a thing off her or the FO, or any other law firm??
Do you think if I go to the hsbc it will do any good?

Bluenose, it is a very good advice from Righty, to check with the law firm as well.

Meanwhile, before you write to the bank, did you try to call and talk both, the bank and the FOS helpline? It could be useful.

              Hi,
I am a bit scared of delving into the law firm side in case I get billed somehow without even having had the debt removed, plus I cannot afford to pay it anyway. (I am 6 months pregnant so no 'stress',but also want this sorted before babies arrival.)
This must sound silly to lots of people but the paralegal did not mention at any point we could be put in this position, even when we explained about me being on a debt management plan.

                Bluenose, I understand completely.
You must put your and future baby's health as your first priority. Last thing you need now is an additional stress.

Then the best way I would think is firstly to call the FOS, just their helpline. Explain them your situation, including your pregnancy, and ask them for the best way forward, considering your current circumstances.
                They might be very helpful.
                Their number is:
                0300 1239123
                0800 0234567
Then, you can post here about the result and we'll think of next step.
Most likely it will be a call to the HSBC.

bluenose please please please contact the Law Society failing which pm me the firms name & I'll check & see if there has been an intervention & who took over their files who incidentally will still have to act for you on the basis of the original CFA

Bluenose, It is a very good advice from Righty. By finding out who took over you are not risking to get billed.
It is useful to get this information. Righty can check it for you, it is great.
To know what happened with that firm and who is currently in charge can only work for your advantage and obtaining this information will not cost you anything.

Forget the FOS, go to the legal ombudsman service, they cover the field that youre in.

if youre d ealing with a solicitors firm that went bust then the legal ombudsman has jurisdiction to deal with any poor service or billing issues not the FOS,

The matters already in hand in that the OP now knows who the liquidator is & how to contact the Practice Principal through the SRA If the OP then find's there's been negligence that would be the time to contact the LO

and? they already said they were concerned about billing etc, if there is poor service (and im not saying there is) but the correct approach is through the ombudsman,

I have already been through the closure of a law firm so i have had first hand experience of this issue.
