I wanted to post a success story. I had 2 credit cards with First Direct, on which I have been paying PPI. The first card was opened in 1994, and was replaced by an upgraded card in 2000. It was only late last year that I actually questioned the policy - I didn't think all those PPI adverts applied to me. When I checked all my paperwork etc., it seemed to me that I had not asked for the insurance. I am a public sector worker and had savings all the time I have had the cards. I completed the FOS form and eventually received a reply saying they would consider the claim for the first card if I could send proof of employment terms and proof of savings, as the application form had a pre-ticked box, but rejected the claim for the second, saying that I had ticked the box myself, could have cancelled the policy, and had not queried it in all the years it had been active. (see letter posted by jazzyjemjem 31/01/12 - mine was virtually identical). I initially thought that was that, but then I found this forum. I realised what I had been sent was a standard "fob off" letter, and I was able to counter their reasons for rejection one by one using advice found here, including the guidelines from the FSA Handbook. They had sent me copies of the original application forms, and both showed that the insurance was recommended; I included with my letter proof of employment terms and proof of savings for the time of taking out both cards. Within a week my complaint had been upheld. After checking their calculations with the spreadsheet found on the forum, they look correct, so I am about to sign and return their form accepting over £8k redress. So thank you Legal Beagles, very much. I should also note that First Direct is a good bank and I love them - in 20 years this is the only time I have had cause to complain to them. And in spite of the initial rejection letter, they have dealt with my complaint quickly and have accepted that their initial decision was flawed. Can't say fairer than that. I'll keep checking back for a few weeks - having some PC trouble at the moment and can't always get online, but if anyone thinks my "appeal" letter might help them send me a message and I'll try to attach it within this thread (if someone tells me how).

A good result for you, and a good recommendation for First Direct. I'd heard they were one of the better banks, but have never had to deal with them. Given what I spend my time doing, that, in itself is a good recommendation.
