  • PPI - help please - how do I find out if I've been paying PPI on credit cards

Hi hope someone can help with the following as I'm now totally confused about whether or not I have been paying PPI on past credit cards.
Here's a brief outline of my situation:

I had 3 credit cards in the past - Sainsburys credit card opened in 2004/2005 and closed paid off in full in July 2010, M&S credit card opened in 2005 and closed in 2010 fully paid off and lastly an MBNA credit card opened in 2006 and also closed and paid off in full inm 2010.

I do not have the original credit agreements for any of these although I do have all the statements but these do not show if PPI is being paid on any of them.

I looked into this on the money saving expert web site and sent each of the credit card companys a letter asking for a copy of the credit agreement and a copy of the terms and conditions that were applicable to the accounts and sent a cheque for £1 to each, all by registered post. So far I have received no reply from MBNA, a reply from M&S with a copy of my original application & t and c's but the photocopy is so small I cannot read it !!!
Sainsburys however, have returned my request letter along with my cheque for £1 and stated that because the account is closed there is no longer a regulated agreement so they cannot provide the documentation !!!
What do I do next? Do I complete and send off a PPI consumer questionnaire for each without knowing if I did pay PPI? or is that just a waste of time?

Please help as I'm getting totally fedup and confused about what to do next.

I also have questions on late payment charges and fees on these accounts but i figure that I need to sort out the PPI stuff first.

Grateful if anyone can help asap.

Hi Chambo, and welcome to you. Yes, the £1 CCA request is only applicable where the account is still 'live.' If the copy that you have been sent is illegible, then they have NOT complied with the CCA request, and you can insist that they send a clear and legible copy. However, with credit cards, the original agreement is often no more than a copy of the application. I think that it is actually a better indication if you have all your statements - as very often the PPI is 'erroneously' charged from a later date.

I would look for regular monthly charges being made - other than account interest. PPI can be called all sorts of things - if you're not sure, then ask us here. If there's no evidence of PPI, then I suspect you didn't have any - but remember to check early statements as well as recent ones.

With regard to penalty charges, there can be an argument for reclaiming some of these as a consequence of the PPI, but if not, then it can be difficult these days. Charges over £12 are easier to reclaim as a rule, but you may have to be persistent.

      Yes--agree with Bill

Ifyou can't see anything on statements---then you wont have had it

      Look for items like this:
      • "Optional Payment Protection"
      • "Payment Protection"
      • "Insurance Cover"

Generally speaking--the monthly amount will be around 8 pence[£0.08] per every £100 of outstanding balance--ie if balance is £2000--ppi around £16 in the month
