  • Wonga Default

    Hello everyone.

I'm new to this site and was advised to come to you guys for the best advice.

I stupidly took out a payday loan from Wonga back in 2012. At the time I was in difficulty financially and got stuck into a horrid cycle of borrowing more and more money from this company where the interest was so high the repayments left me even more short with money each month so had no alternative to keep borrowing.

As as a result in Jun 2012 I could not make the payment of over £1000. I arranged a monthly payment plan which was affordable for my situation and they were happy with. After a few payments they started taking more and more money out each month which I hadn't consented to. To cut a long story short I cancelled my card and began making card payments so they could not take money via direct debit. I ran into further difficultly with bank charges and so on and back in August 2013 I stopped making payments to Wonga.

I never heard anything from them and it's been over a year since I last spoke to somebody there. However after becoming more stable financially I've obtained a copy of my credit file in a bid to find out my exact situation and improve my credit score/clean up my file.

I noticed a default on it from a company name I did not recognise. Naturally I challenged this and after 30 days the response was that the default was correct and so was not removed from my file.
I checked out this company name which turned out to be Wonga but I never received a notice before the default. My my questions are; the default on my file isn't under the name of Wonga - is this allowed? And surely if i'm supposed to receive a notice of default before it's applied to my credit file then does that make it void? If so what can I do about it?

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

    Re: Wonga Default

So you are saying that you had a loan with Wonga, but what name is the default registered under on your credit file. Is this a debt collection agency that bought the debt?

I suggest that the first thing you should do is to send a Subject Access Request to Wonga to obtain all the personal data they hold on you. That will reveal all the history of the account and show you what documents they hold regarding default and so on and if they sold the account. There will probably be lots of penalty charges there as well that can be reclaimed.

      Thank you for your reply.

That's correct. I've stupidly locked myself out of my credit file so as soon as I can get back in I'll let you know what name it's under. It's definitely Wonga using a different name though as the debt has not been sold on to a third party and when I Googled the name that appeared on my file it came up as Wonga - I just find it rather strange that they would do that?

How do I go about sending them a Subject Access Request and what do I do if they haven't sent me a notice of default?

I'm also unsure what you mean about penalty charges that can be reclaimed. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to this kind of thing.

The default is registered under Quickbridge (UK) Ltd
