Hardship question please

Hi I have a question about claiming back charges from a closed, settled but defaulted account with natwest, I am going to claim back under financial hardship, but my account has been closed about 2 years now, do I need to prove that I was in financial hardship whilst my account was up and running or would it be for the financial hardship at present, sorry if this seems dumb but dont wanna give them any opportunity to stall even more.
