As you don't mention this as a problem, I assume you remember the debt and think it may about the right amount.

Did you borrow often from them before this debt you defaulted on? And from other payday lenders?

I have never come across a joint payday loan, they must have been either in your name or your ex's.

It may be possible to claim a refund of some of the interest you paid by making an affordability complaint, see https://debtcamel.co.uk/payday-loan-refunds/, but you are going to have to be clear about who borrowed and from which lender.

Your options for the debt you have been contacted about would seem to be:
        1) ask the debt collector to prove the debt - supply a CCA agreement and a statement of account. For a loan about 4 years ago, they can probably do this.
        2) pay it
        3) make an arrangement to pay
        4) put in a complaint to PaydayUk about unaffordable lending, tell the debt collector the debt is in dispute and ask them to hold any action until the complaint is resolved - if your complaint is upheld it will reduce or write off the debt you owed
        5) ignore the letter - in which case they may proceed to legal action. In theory you could put in a complaint then, but it may not be possible to get the legal action stopped and once there is a CCJ the Finanical Ombudsman won't consider a complaint.

Whether a complaint is sensible really depends on how much you (not your ex) borrowed from PaydayUk before this debt.

Have you ever had any payday loans or other short term high cost credit? Because they had different brand names... Put PaydayUK into the FCA register https://register.fca.org.uk/ and then look at the list of all the brand names they have, past and rpesent, and see if any ring a bell.

ok then you need to send them a Prove It letter, eg https://debtcamel.co.uk/prove-it/. You could add a sentence at the begining saying you have never had a payday loan in your life.
