  • JSA deduction for a unknown fine please help!

My son has received a letter from the Job Centre informing him he has been fined by HMCTS Sussex ( we live in Portsmouth!). It is the standard letter as in do you wish to contest this. The funny thing is the creditor is HMCTS Sussex and on contacting Job Centre they have no idea what he has been fined for except they received an email saying they had to apply a deduction of £5 per week for 28 weeks. I am led to believe it was carried out at Worthing Magistrates Court. My son is a vunerable adult. We cannot imagine what this fine is and getting no where fast! He is single, lives at home, doesn't drive, has no children, I pay the TV Licence. The only thing he has is an out of date provisional licence ( he had never had a driving lesson and the last time he was behind the wheel of a car (toy) he was 6!). I have been passed from pillar to post. Please someone help. Ty

    Hi There

I would be tempted to contact the Magistrates Court in the first instance and ask for information regarding this fine. You cannot really do anything about this until you confirm this information and what right of appeal you may have, if you wish to do so.

      Hi Snoopy,

Thank you for taking the time to reply 😊 and for the telephone numbers. I will contact the fine queries and try to establish what all this is about. Whilst not disputing if John has committed some henious crime (and I can't figure out what it is as I have racked my brain) he is entitled to know what it is! I will post the outcome when known. x

        Hi
Found out that the HMCTS had got the wrong NI Number and it is someone else not John! Seems like it was one digit out.... All that stress and not even an apology. I have sent a copy via email of the letter from JC and requested that HMCTS contract them immediately to cease deductions from his JSA. I have also requested they copy him in to any correspondence with the JC so we have an audit trail. I will also contact JC to inform them personally as to what has gone on! Thank you for your help! I now need some advice on reductions in HB for non dependants as I have been to the CAB today and I think they were as confused as I am. x
