Hi everyone,
Recently I have received a letter from my council telling me I owe £1084 from a previous financial year.
In the letter was a number to call and told me to do so within 14 days of being issued to prevent further recovery action being taken. On Friday 29th I did this, I explained that I thought that my council tax was incorporated with my rent, but upon receiving this letter I now know otherwise.
I said it's a honest mistake and I am calling to resolve this and offer payment of monthly instalments (on top of the council tax I am currently paying) and the reply I got was: we can't accept that as it'll take to long to clear the debt is already a year old.
I then said if it's a year old and you can see I'm paying council tax currently then why not bring it to my attention sooner? I had no reply. I was told that they could give me an: attachment of earning order and they would take more directly from my account, when at the moment I can't afford more than I offered.
I didn't get much help at all from the lady on the phone, she was rude and sounded like she couldn't be bothered. When she told me they can give me an attachment of earnings I asked where in the letter I received its stated she told me I have to Google it.
I have a few financial difficulties at present and my partner has gone on maternity leave (statutory)
Does anyone have any advice on how I should deal with this
Thanks.
