• RLP advice

Good afternoon. I have been browsing the forums for advice on RLP. But would like to make sure wether my situation is the same. Things have been very hard this year since having my baby. Money has been a real issue, and due to benefits making mistakes after my husband changed jobs ( they had held back our payments) we have been in a desperate situation. I went into primark today and I just wanted to get my daughter some new clothes. There is no real justification as she doesn't need clothes as we have second hand bits from family. I just wanted to have something nice for Xmas. So i tried to take them. I Know it's wrong and it'd not something I will do again. But I'm concerned about paying RLP. We just can't afford to pay them as we struggle to pay for the weekly food shop. We are looking at moving bk to my parents in the new year as I just can't guarantee a future for my family here. So we won't be staying at this address for too long. But I gave my address, name and telephone number. No police were called. I was asked to go bk into the shop after I had left. I K ew I was in the wrong so I went bk in but I can't afford to pay a fine. Couldnt anyone give me some advice? Will this go against my refit rating. As although I have no debts we hope once we have moved to my mums we can save up for our own place again. I don't want to burden my little family over a poor judgment. The clothes were give back and in resalable Condition. Should I try to pay them back a small sum monthly as I was in the wrong and there probably is video footage. Or shall I ignore the letters. Thank you in advance.

Hi hun ... and to LB!!
Please don't beat yourself up about this - I know how hard it can be with little/no money coming in and a little one to look after)

As you will no doubt be told by other Beagles ( des8 @Celestine and @PAWS to name but three ) rlp are not worth worrying about!! You were stopped before you got away, the clothes were returned in a saleable condition ... you owe rlp NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!

Debt is like any other trap, easy enough to get into, but hard enough to get out of.

Re: RLP advice

Just get one thing straight in your mind:- there is no fine. Only the courts can issue fines and since the police were not called then there is no chance of that.

What you will get, without doubt, is a series of letters from RLP, with lots of red ink, threatening all sorts of dire consequences for not contacting them and not paying a sum they have pulled out of thin air. The fact that you may be moving means that that itself should go away as they will not be able to contact you.

Do not even think about paying money to Primark. There has been no loss to Primark as the goods were recovered and put back on sale, there has been no loss of staff time as the security men were doing what they are paid to do and would have been paid whether you took the goods or not.

Re: RLP advice

You say you've read other treads about RLP.
You have been given sound advice above by Kati & Ostell, which I will repeat in a loud voice:
IGNORE RLP .LETTERS
They will attempt to intimidate you into giving them a donation.
They will instruct Debt collectors
They will even offer you a lower settlement figure to get a donation.
Ignore them all.
Usually a six to nine month process

I'm not sure that moving will cause it to go away.
If you move and don't have your post redirected, letters might be returned to RLP.
If this happens I wouldn't put it past them to issue a county court claim at your old address.
As you wouldn't know about it and couldn't defend it they would get a judgement by default.
They don't do court normally, because they lose. But if they know a claim will be undefended....

So when you move ensure Royal Mail redirect your post for sufficient time.
Don't rely on new occupants of your current home forwarding your post.

If you need reassurance, come back here.

Re: RLP advice

Des is spot on – do make sure you get RLP’s letters sent on to your new address so you can defend any rubbish threats they make but please, please do not let them frighten you into paying.
You are not a criminal and the fact that you have suffered so many financial setbacks without getting into debt speaks volumes about how strong you are. It is quite natural to want nice things for you and your family and the good times will come –you know they will. We all go through boom and bust cycles in our lives and to be honest, when you look back, the boom times are not always the best times.
If/when RLP start getting shirty come back on here and the clever beagles will steer you through but do not let this stop you enjoying what you have got – your lovely family. If you do find yourself fretting, especially at night, then come online and browse this site. Read about how others have dealt with this sort of situation then have a giggle on the ‘Friday smile’ thread or try not to get addicted to the word association!

Re: RLP advice

Thank you everyone so, so much for your support and understanding. I can't tell you how relived I feel, and touched by your words. I know things will get better and it's just a case of slogging on through it. Il try not to let RLP get to me. Shall I even read the letters that come through? Or just bin them without opening them?

Re: RLP advice

I would suggest you read the letters, see through the empty threats and pseudo legalese, and then store them for later.
When it has passed, you will then be able to look at them in a different light, and smile,
The fact you can stand up to them, and then put the whole episode into perspective, will help you realise it has made you stronger.

Re: RLP advice

As you have not Stolen anything in the meaning you deprive someone of their property you have committed no offence so cannot be tried in a Court as RLP are not a Court in this country they cannot fine you they will just try it on with stupid threats.

You may get letters they mean as much as if I sent you a demand for money NOTHING ignore it but keep LB posted and retain the letters never contact them in any way
Get back to your family they are more important than a bunch of chancers threatening you they are the least important thing in your life even sewer rats come above them.
