  • Can I appel to RLP?

Today i went to primark with my mom to return my shopping that we no longer needed as my mom wasnt travelling anymore. We had bought some clothes for my nephew and when we went to return this mom and i were still contemplating whether we needed to return the current shopping and buy some bigger clothes for him. Mom and i opened the bag to see what we already had and age range for it. My mom by mistake put the item back on the shelf and wheni realised this, i put the item back in the bag. I didnt want to do this in front of the camera or a store assiatant as they would have thought i was a thief. I was then caught bu security saying that i had done a fraud but when i told them what happened, the security man did say that whilst he understands what i was saying but to him it looked dodgy. I also two other items on the receipt that i did not return as i wanted to keep them, so i was trying to tell the security that if i intended theft or fraud why wouldnt i have done the same on those two items. No police was called seeing that i havent had a criminal record and it was a genuine misunderstanding. Although they decided that they were going to get in touch with the civil recovery for me to pay the money to them for an item i had returned. They took a copy of my driving license but it didnt have my recent address. I am going to the store tomorrow to give them my latest address. Having done my research and reading this website i understand i shouldnt respond to RLP but do you think that when i receive the letter, its worth me telling them what happened and how i shouldn't be paying anything.

Thank you for your help in advance.

    Regards,
    Sharma.

If they don't have your current address then don't give it to them, it will save you from the letters later on. Walk away from them.

Why are they trying to get you to pay for items you were returning? Surely the store should be paying you

      Hi and welcome.
You could appeal to RLP, but why would you?
They would only take it as a sign of weakness.
As ostell advises DO NOT GIVE THE STORE YOUR ADDRESS.
      Save yourself the stress.

PS update your driving licence: penalty for driving with out of date licence £1000 (more than RLP!)

Re: Can I appel to RLP?

Hey, thank you for your reply. I made a mistake in the end though. I went back to the security man and wrote my address on a piece of paper. He said he needs proof of my address so he needs me to take a copy of the bank statement tomorrow to prove that my recent address is blah blah blah. I don't know what I should do.

Don't you think ignoring the letters will make the matter worse. Another problem here is that the store security will probably tell the RLP that I did a fraud instead of telling them what happened. Not sure how to proceed. Shall I go to citizen advice bureau for help?

One more question, does this put me on a crime record or anything?

Yes thank you for letting me know, I will put in the request to get my details updated.

        Regards,
        Sharma.

You are NOT a criminal only the Police or courts can after you have commited an offence and admitted or have been convicted would you have a criminal record RLP are NOT the law..

The Security idiot has no right to see your bank statement or anything else just ignore them and RLP any further letters come back on here for advice,

You made a mistake that's all forget it and RLP

Re: Can I appel to RLP?

You gave them your address, so leave it at that.
Why should you run around proving where you live.
You did nothing wrong and owe nobody (least of all RLP) anything.
When they write to you (and they will) ignore their letters.
            Do not reply.
They will threaten, cajole and plead with you for money.
            Ignore them.
If you need reassurance when the letters start feel free to return here.

Re: Can I appel to RLP?

There has been a case on here with similar circumstances where there was hassle from RLP but eventually the person demanded the goods back from the store and there were reluctantly handed back.

Are you saying that the store still have goods of yours that were taken off you?

Re: Can I appel to RLP?

                  Hey ostell,

I wanted to return the goods and I did but when I walked out of the store the security approached me. They then kept that piece I returned and asked me to pay for it as they thought I stole it and returned it. So the situation is that I have got my money back but they are going to tell civil recovery that I stole this item so I need to pay for it.

Did this person get in touch with RLP to demand the goods. I feel like I should send them a letter back if I get one from them explaining what I said here and send the copy of the receipts.

Re: Can I appel to RLP?

............and why do you think RLP will take any notice of your explanation?
Experience of others indicates that any attempt to engage with RLP leads to an increase in their efforts to extract money from the victim as they are seen as more vulnerable

Thanks des8. I see where you are coming from. I was wondering how does this end then. Will they keep sending me letters forever or is there a stop to this?

Re: Can I appel to RLP?

They give up after a while - they find they are paying too much in electricity pushing buttons/paper/postage and sweaty lips on envelopes. and that the receiver is laughing at them for being idiots with no clout = they lost court cases in the past!

Re: Can I appel to RLP?

It does vary from case to case.
Sometimes it goes on for upto 9 months or so.
They will use BIG SCARY RED LETTERS
They will even employ Debt collectors in an attempt to collect .
You know they are nearing the end of their cycle when they offer you a discounted figure to bring the matter to a conclusion!
Just keep ignoring or refer back here for support

Re: Can I appel to RLP?

                            Hi guys,

Thank you so much for the help you have provided. I have just come back to primark to give them my proof of address but I told the guy I wanted him to try and not go to civil recovery of possible as they will charge me lots of money.

The security man was really nice and spoke to the manager and they said they wanted me to pay for it. That's all. Apparently they had a lot going on on that busy weekend and that Sunday they had lots of issues. I guess I was just a victim of frustration. Anyways I thought I will post the outcome here. I am so relieved.

I will definitely be referring people here to this forum if I come across anyone who needs advice.

But you confirmed your address to RLP (depsite advice) and you are thinking of paying for things you have already paid for! Please explain
