  • Pet insurance from tesco

I am furious how Tesco have treated me! We have a 10 year old German Shepherd who has been insured with Tesco Pet Insurance since he was 8 weeks old. The premiums started at £11 per month. Over the years, despite only making a couple of claims for a few hundred pounds each, I received a renewal for £122 per month(last years was £60 per month, which I thought was already expensive, little did I know what was to come).
I have spoken to Customer Services who escalated my claim to two further 'managers', yet all had the same lame excuses of my dog being older and higher risk. Yes, I accept he is older, but only by one year, how on earth does that warrant my premium DOUBLING?
I have shopped at Tesco for years, and bought my petrol at Tesco for years.
NO MORE - I have cancelled my pet insurance policy, and will redirecting my hard earned money elsewhere in the future.
I would be better putting the £122 per month into a savings account in case my dog gets ill, and using that if needed.
I am going to be contacting the Ombudsman, The Chief Executive of Tesco, Watchdog, and Social Media. People need to know that pet insurance through Tesco is a SCAM - they start you on a low premium and then raise it over the years, and once they have you over a barrel with an older animal, they cut and run. SHAME ON YOU TESCO!!!!!

It's pointless dealing with Tesco customer (dis) service operators or managers make a Formal Complaint to the CEO, it requires full investigation and response within 56 days.

    ( It works!!)

WOW!! What sort of insurance were you getting (lifetime/time limited/per condition etc...) and was the £122 a month for just the one dog? I've just got quotes for insurance my THREE pets (two dogs, one cat) and the most expensive monthly premium was less than £105 for the lot

Yip, one dog. Been with Tesco pet insurance for ten years. Each year they just gradually bump it up, up, up. But this renewal beats them all, it literally doubled! It was time limited to 12 months per condition, with a maximum insurance of £2,500. The excess was £60 per condition. Last year he had two claims amounting to just over £200. Their response was that 1) vet fees are increasing, 2) the condition may reoccur, and 3) he's an older dog now, so a higher risk. Really?
They offered me a 10% discount on that price, so it would be £116 per month - adding insult to injury. Or they said they could up the excess to £120 and that may slightly reduce the premium.
I've now written to Dave Lewis, CEO at Tesco, with a formal complaint as suggested. I've also logged a story with Watchdog. I've posted on social media where I can. Just ridiculous situation to be in. They have you over a barrel you see, as they know that no other insurance company is interested in insuring a 10 year old dog.
            Thanks for your reply though.

I'm afraid your experience is not limited to Tescos.
We have had dogs & cats for 45 years and have never insured them against accident or sickness.
I calculated that with never less than 3 insurable animals it was not viable, and self insurance was the way to go............. and so far I'm right.

I'm sure if I was to calculate the amount of money I paid for insurance in the past ten years, it would far exceed any claims that were paid out. But I guess that's insurance for you, but we tend to live with the "what if's" ....

Try this link https://boughtbymany.com/news/articl...or-older-dogs/. Although a quick google search shows a number of insurers willing to insure older dogs
