Hi, my first post ever but I have panicked a bit.
I owed Council Tax to L B Tower Hamlets and the amount was under dispute as I moved and they did not pursue me for the oustanding amount. Over the last couple of years I have been in communication with the council and made several offers to arrange a payment scheme but requested a schedule of payments and whether the council had taken into account two periods of unemployment. Anyway, my letters went largely ignored and they returned my cheques (but cashed a couple) and now have passed the debt to Newlyn.
I had the Notice of Enforcement arrive a week after its date and the day I was leaving to go away for a family funeral. I sent a letter to them, as I was unable to call, promising to pay £500 today and a further £60 per month thereafter. However, today I had a letter of attendance (hand written from their Bailiff) and have seen that there has been an additional £235 added to the debt. As I said I panicked and borrowed £ 400 to send another payment but it still leaves £1000 outstanding (including their additional fees). I don't think I should be having to pay these fees and can't bear the thought of bailiffs turning up when my children ar at home by themselves and I can't get the rest of the money together for a long time.
What should I do?
