  • HMRC Self Assesment surprise

    Greetings all,

Firstly mods feel free to move this if it's in the wrong section. I left the UK in 2012 and informed the taxman of my departure using their form which I downloaded from their site which was current at the time, I was military before leaving so all my deductions were up to date. I have worked abroad ever since and always take care not to exceed the time limits for visiting the UK. This week I have received some slightly confusing demands for not completing my self assessment on time ?? Is this a common thing for the tax people to have a bit of a strange day and get stuff wrong or am I in the brown stuff here? I was pretty sure I didn't need to do self assessment whilst not being a UK resident? I plan to write a letter explaining everything but was wondering if any of the experts on here suggest other ways, thanks in advance as ever.

Not unknown for them to get it very wrong. They managed to do an assessment for me that that included a state pension that was in the 100,000's a year. I wish. It sounds funny but it managed to reduce my company pension by 50% (the max allowed) for a couple of months!

      Re: HMRC Self Assesment surprise

I contacted these people via an email to their online help desk, I explained in great detail I do not reside in UK and therefore cannot use a phone line to contact them, 5 days later they sent me a glib email directing me to their phone line ????? Well that shows they read my mail then, since this I have received more demands back home which is putting stress on the other half. I am now emailing every time they send something through the door so as to keep evidence of me trying to solve the problem. Any advice for other actions I should take ??
