Debt in UAE - Letter from Coyle White Devine

Hello, is there anyone that could give some advice regarding debts in Dubai.
I have just received a letter from Coyle White Devine in Amersham stating that they have been engaged by their client to arrange repayment of an 'overdraft liability'.
I left Dubai in Dec 2000 believing that I had closed all accounts. A copy of a bank statement they sent shows they started applying interest to the account as of the 31/1/12001 and have done ever since which has now mounted to a debt of approx. £23,000 from approx. £1,500. I have lived in the UK since Jan 2001 and this is the first time I have heard from anyone stating I owe this money. If I had known from the start then I would have settled the outstanding immediately.
CWD are threatening County Courts and bankruptcy alongwith stating that they all the debt is governed by the laws of UAE they are free to pursue legal proceedings anywhere in the world. Plus, CWD are securing an average of 10 judgements a month at CC's!
They have given 21 days to pay otherwise legal proceedings!
Talk about panic, I have no idea which way to turn, sleepless nights have already started. Is anyone able to help with overseas law. Here's hoping

Hi Welcome to LB,
I'm thinking that as this has been dormant and no payments or written acknowledgment has been made 13-14 years an English court would not consider making a judgement on this, as this is statute barred under English civil law.


Not sure but I believe that the Limitations in Dubai are quite extended

If you Google "Coyle White Devine" you will find literally hundreds of threads from people in your situation.
There doesn't seem to be any consensus on how to deal with them.
Suggestions range from ignore, (unless you receive court papers at which time you defend) or start by denying the debt and asking for full information.
It appears they are targeting those with property, and threatening bankruptcy.
There is uncertainty about whether CWD are acting as solicitors or DCA, and whether the courts will enforce in this country if a defence is lodged.
It seems that if a top flight firm of solicitors is used CWD fail, but if a local solicitor is used they win.
Suggest you do a lot more reading, whilst waiting for more advice from others ,

Thank you all for your input. Unfortunately its not enough to help. I know its 15 years and I believe I am just inside that time limit. Regardless of the time limits I still don't have a clue what to do. Do I send a letter to CWD or do I ring the bank in Dubai and ask the details....

From what I have read there is no point in contacting the bank in Dubai.
In an effort to delay matters until it is SB you could try writing to CWD without admitting any debt.
Ask for proof that they have been instructed by the bank.
Confirm that you cleared all debit balances before leaving Dubai and you assume this must be a mistake.
Accordingly you require a copy of any agreement they believe existed between you and the bank, as well as a complete statement of account, together with a copy of the terms and conditions of the account.

cwd are a nasty bunch they seem to hook up with anyone who will make them shed loads of cash I own Removal business and they represent a "trade body "called the national guild of removers and stores ltd ( look them up online) with the help of cwd they have been on to a nice little earner suing there ex members and some wishing to leave for thousands I don't know which lowlife from cwd is is running this one but we have to deal with a guy call sheean who will tell the court things that are not quite right . best thing to do I complain to the law society about . I had a funny fealing that they would make a habit of this sort of busness they have a reputation for not receiving mail and appealing every decision even if they win to get MORE

Hi Welcome to LB,
Do CWD mention a judgement made in Dubai?
I understand the " limitation period" in Dubai is 15 years on debt.
No judgement in Dubai means that this must be dealt with under
English Civil Law I think, in which case the alleged debt is statute barred.

I'm sure others more versed in this than I will be along with further advice as soon as they are available.
