Hi all
Im After a bit of advice please, we've recieved a letter from Rossendales saying they have been instructed by the HMRC to collect monies owed to them,
i want to pay it to them as I don't want a bad mark on my credit file but I'm unsure of the best way to go about sorting it, the amount is for £2,999,99 which is peculiar as originally the HMRC claimed it was for £3,500 roughly,
anyway I simply can't pay this off in full or half price, I'm wondering what's the best way to set up a payment plan and what you would say is a reasonable amount to pay each week?
Any advice is welcome,

Hi,

Government debts are not reported to credit reference agencies.

HMRC Debt Recovery may be open to offers directly.

Make yourself an Income/Expenditure statement then you know how much you can afford to pay without causing hard ship.

This is a letter from Rosendales professional debt collectors who have been instructed by the HM revenues & Customs to collect an over payment of tax credits,
Im thinking £20 per week is ok but can they refuse it? And would I call them to make the offer or do it by post? xxx

Keep everything in writing!

Have you got a current income/expenditure sheet that you can use to work out an affordable repayment plan?

Hi, Always keep any offer of payment In writing and do not send any money until you have written agreement to the offer.
There is one good point the debt is with the debt collection arm of Rossendales not the bailiff arm.
The I &E statement is important as Rossendales might refuse and if they do you can go back to HMRC with the I& E directly.
Above all keep copies of all correspondence.

i haven't done a sheet, I know I can afford £20 per week, I'm just unsure if I should call them or send a letter with the offer and can they refuse?

You should still keep everything in writing ... that way you have written proof of everything that has been said

An I/E sheet is a good idea to have (even if you know you can afford the £20/wk) as it gives you a little more 'bargaining power'. both Rossendales and HMRC will be able to see at a glance how much you can realistically afford (and should accept your offer more easily as a result)

I could probably afford more than the £20 but as I work on a zero hour contract some weeks I may only work 10 hours and others I may work closer to 30 so to even it out I could easily afford £20 a week without it impacting on us too much but any more than that and the months where I may only work a few hours a week might be hard for us to pay more than £20, would a payment plan be flexible where if I could afford to pay more at the end of the month I could, otherwise it would just be £20 a week xxx

All you can do is ask ... If you offer the minimum you can afford (guaranteed) per month, with the proviso that you will pay more if and when you can afford it then they might be more amenable to accepting it. I still think that you should have an I/E sheet to hand as a bargaining tool tho' :tinysmile_twink_t2:

Where can I download a sheet from, I will do one on the lowest form of my wages and my husbands wages xxx

Give it a couple of days hun, if you don't hear anything by Thursday/Friday you could email them again ... you could also send them the info via recorded/signed for post if you wanted to get proof of postage and delivery. Don't phone them at all (unless you can record the call).

Thanks Kati, I will do as you are saying I will email them again on Thurs/Fri plus I will send them a recorded delivery letter with my offer too,,
