Old debt resurfaced

Hi I've returned as an old debt has resurfaced. Many years ago before I started repaying a credit card debt and I thought I had come close to settling it with Connaught Collection. i have continued to make small payments without fail. Imagine my horror therefore when I received contact 13 years later from Intrum saying that they had been assigned the debt in 2008 and I still owe over £4000. I am astounded at this figure. I am totally out of practice and not used to dealing with these matters. All advice very welcome.
