  • Old debt - Excessive overdraft charge and a collection agency!!

Hello. I was wondering if somebody could give me some info on how to go about this.

I had an old Halifax bank account that 4 years ago, I ran up my overdraft. I had two halifax accounts and when I tried to settle the debt, I thought I was paying for both. Turns out it was just the one which was paid off fully (£700)

This one was up to £900 and they have added another £900 in overdraft charges just for good measure. When I spoke on the phone with the Halifax bloke years ago, he said that the accounts were frozen and closed and no more charges would be made. Looks like he was telling fibs.

I thought I had dealt with all my debts I acquired during my silly period in my life and this is a major blow as I am getting married in May and all the final costs are now coming in, and we are going to try to get a mortgage next summer.

Is there any way of getting these charges removed? They seems excessive! The Collection Agency want the full £1800 which I don't feel is fair. I would happily pay the £900 and I really doubt the Agency is gonna go for that as they will want the lot.

How can I get this sorted? I have a statement from Halifax from the year in question (although still waiting for some of it as they send it in two parts and keep you waiting) but when I went in, they said the account was closed so can't see into it. I just think they werent interested. I might go back in with the statement and see then.

    Any help will be appreciated.
