  • Robinson Way

    Hi, new here.

About 6 weeks ago I received a phone call from RW claiming I owe British Gas money from 2007. I informed them I was unaware of any monies owed to BG. I lived with my mum at the time and she had a pre payment meter but they said the debt was for that address. Anyway they told me they would put the account on hold for 30 days so I could provide them proof that I was living with my mum, well 1. I don't speak with my mum any more and 2. as far as I am aware it is up to them to prove the debt is mine, not up to me to prove it isn't mine?

I haven't heard anything since until this morning when I received a letter saying a local representative will do a house call to arrange a payment plan. I have printed out a sample letter informing them to provide me with proof it is in fact my debt or cease contact. (sample letter from national debt helpline site)

What is the deal with RW? will they send bailiffs round? I'm quite scared here, we can hardly afford to put the heating on and we have an 18 month old little boy so there is no way I wan't to be having to pay a debt I know nothing about

    Thanks

In whose name was the account? Have you ever had your name on a BG bill?

They say the account was in my name, but when the called they said it could be a case of mistaken identity with my name being on the electors register. They then said it was down to me to prove it wasn't mine. The only bills I had at my mums was my mobile phone bill. I now live with my partner, since 2010 and we're not with BG. The only time I was with BG was when I lived with my ex but I'm certain it was in his name, we split and gave up the house in 2007.

It's down to them to prove the account is yours not the other way round.

If a company fails to provide a bill, companies have been told by Ofgem not to bill for any electricity or gas used by a customer more than two years previously. From July 2007, companies who have failed to issue bills will be expected not to bill for any amount which dates back for longer than a year.

Therefore tell my friends at incompetent and sons to stick that bill where a christmas rabbit might reside. And if it was a prepayment meter then it's their issue they didn't update and has got David Cameron to do with you or even your mum mate.

And the Christmas message, don't deal with Grittish Bas or Wobinson Ray.

Is this backed by legislation somewhere?

Am i lost here the OP is being chased for a bill that she says cannot be heres as they lived in a property where gas was supplied by pr paid meter in anothers name?
The thread starts ( About 6 weeks ago I received a phone call from RW claiming I owe British Gas money from 2007?
Now as i understand if a debt collector phones they ask security questions to prove the are talking to the correct person presume they had some info on the alleged debtor?
So in my mind theres something wrong here first with the phone call and again with the letter saying a doorstep agent will call now in my experience there are several letters before this and they will contain details of the debt I:E money owed and the claiment so where is this?

RW are always to be treated with caution, and I have to say, I'd be inclined to either totally ignore this, or send a Prove It letter:

I have had no letters prior to the phone call. I have no idea where they got my phone number from either.
The letter I received last week stated I owed £153 to British Gas. When RW phoned me, the only security question the asked was my current and previous address. I don't see how this can be my debt as from 2003-2006 I lived with my ex - his house, all bills in his name, September 2006 I moved back in with my mum after we split up.

I will ignore this for now and If I hear any more from them I will send them the Prove It letter.

                      Thanks
