  • Need some advice please

    Hi all,
When I left my job due to ill health I had several unsecured debts.I had lots of problems with the dwp which I won't go into. Subsequently our rent was not getting paid so we used my credit cards to keep a roof over our head.I know we should not have done this but our landlord was not a very nice man and he would have thrown us out.
One of the debts was an unsecured loan from Northern Rock for £18.5k.While I was working I paid off over £8.5k yet at present still owe more than I borrowed I think around £19.7k. I currently pay £3.00 pcm by standing order.I do know NR had stopped the interest but each year they applied an admin charge of exactly the amount I pay them pa coincidence?
The second debt is to a credit card for over £2.5k I pay them £3.00pcm
There are four other smaller debts all paid by standing order getting £3.00 each pcm. The trouble is I have had no contact from any of the representatives of these debts for nearly 4 years. I don't know if they have been sold on or what amount is owing. So I don't know if I am paying the right people.
We have moved house and changed our phone number. I cannot find any of the paperwork for any of these debts and the smaller ones I don't even know the names of the companies. No formal payment agreement was ever made with the companies I just said this is what you are getting accept it or take me to court.
I was thinking of stopping the standing orders and hopefully the companies would contact us although at our old address. We only moved a short distance and still live in the same village so the postman knows our old address he will still deliver the letters.
I just do not want to be paying the wrong people for years and wish to know how much I owe. The debts altogether were about £26k 6 years ago.
The last thing I want is to deal with is any DCA's I hate them with a passion. We are being left alone but I am worried I have no idea what is happening with the debts.
I would be grateful for any advice.

Just to add I am not concerned about phone calls if they get our number as we have a truecall system and I can block and record calls.

    Hiya,

if you have been paying the companies as per any agreement I would be inclined to call them and ask for an update.

They can trace your account from your address and postcode, so that shouldnt be a problem. If you have lost the contact details please let me know the creditors names and I will find them for you.

Thanks for the reply. I have no details at all. All I can do is check the standing orders on my bank account and see what the details are on there.

Do you know if any of these loans had Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) taken out on them ? I always ask this question, as PPI is my area of combat. Very often, the PPI can be reclaimed as mis-sold, and used to repay or reduce the debt(s).

          Hi Bill-K,
None of them had PPI. Although I do have a Barclay card that I have not defaulted on. PPI payments of £1.60pcm come out of our account I assumed it was for this card when I inquired with our bank (Barclays) it turns out the PPI is for a closed Barclay card account. This money has been coming out for at least 10 years.I never agree to PPI as I always believed it was a rip off.
I have look at our standing orders and this is the information held on the debts.
MBNA, Fairfax solicitors, IQOR, AIC UK LTD and Marbles. I was sure there was a sixth one.

Sorry to hear that I won't be much help then SB. I reckon the most you'd get back for that Barclays PPI is about £300 or so. Worth putting in a claim for - but it won't help very much in solving your problems.

                          Hi,

Apologies for the following Spanish Inquisition, but getting back to your first post, and before you start contacting anyone, how did you arrive at afigure of £3.00 per month for each of these debts?

Do you own your own home? Is there equity in it? How much?

Have you had literally NO contact from any of these creditors?

Have you ever / recently completed a Common Financial Statement or other similar quality Income and Expenditure form?

Have you sought any FREE debt advice?

What is your ideal outcome for this?

Hi labman, I will try and answer your questions.
how did you arrive at a figure of £3.00 per month for each of these debts?
At the time I was on IB I worked out what we could pay on our income at that time. But I wanted an amount that I knew we could sustain.Benefits never keep up with living costs and I was hoping my health would improve so I could return to employment in a less stressful job. Basically I told them this is what I am offering accept it or take me to court. I also informed them I was vulnerable and I one of conditions (Crohns) can be triggered by stress. I added I would hold them responsible for any deterioration in my health caused by constant harassment either through phone calls or letters.

Do you own your own home? Is there equity in it? How much?
No, At the time we were renting privately now we have an HA property.

Have you had literally NO contact from any of these creditors?
After some thought it must be at least 5 years possible 6 no contact at all apart from one. Fairfax Solicitors contacted me once at my old address.

Have you ever / recently completed a Common Financial Statement or other similar quality Income and Expenditure form?
                            Not to my knowledge.

Have you sought any FREE debt advice?
When I first left work I contacted Payplan.

What is your ideal outcome for this?
I would love to be rid of the debts(not that it will happen) especially Northern Rock I hate this large debt hanging over me and will never be able to pay it off.
