  • MacKenzie Hall bought my debt

    Hi there,

Umm... I don't really know where to start. About a year ago I developed a serious gambling addiction and began burning through money at an alarming rate.

Earlier this year I took out multiple payday loans to fund my habit, Every month my entire wage was going to paying off these debts. Last month I lost my job but the debts are still there. My bank accounts are overdrawn and I've applied for Jobseekers and of course, am looking for any job that will take me.

Instead of sorting the problem I buried my head in the sand and ignored it. I have 2 loans left to pay, one is to Wonga for around £350 and I owed QuickQuid £320. I have literally no money but received an e-mail from QQ saying they had sold my debt to MacKenzie Hall. I have no assets whatsoever so have no way of making money. I live at home with my Mum and Sister who are aware of my problem and helped me in the past to stop, but are unaware of these debts.

I googled the company name and found this forum, any help whatsoever would be massively appreciated. Should I contact Wonga over the phone to explain the situation? And what should I do to prepare myself for the inevitable bombardment from MacKenzie Hall?

    Thanks again for any advice,
    Martin

      Hi Martin

Firstly you recognise you have a problem with gambling addiction. Have you sought help? If you are receiving counselling for your addiction you should be accepted as a vulnerable person, and treated as such under the OFT debt collection guidlines. However, until you inform people of your position they can do nothing about it.

That said, MH are well known to ignore any and all debt collection guidlines so you must, i suggest, get help form a debt charity such as the CCCS. Its a free service and they will negociate with your creditors on your behalf. MH will not have any option but to deal with the CCCS (or other) which will stop them harrassing you each and every day. But, you MUST make that first step and get help, you know it won't go away.

Hi Martin, and welcome to you. Well done for admitting to yourself that gambling is a problem, and I'm so sorry to hear what damage it has done to your life. Well done also for having the guts to talk about it in a self-help forum such as this. DCA's are not my area, but Alsagerman's advice seems to be an excellent plan.

And think positive - the only way is up from now on !!!

And NEVER, EVER talk to a DCA on the phone, they are not worth wasting your breath on, keep everything in writing that way you have proof of everything.
