    I think you need to dig deeper than that.

    You need to ask for a copy of the authority for which the debt collector is acting. Otherwise you have no legal obligation to communicate with them.

    And that needs to be done BEFORE you offer them anything. If barclays has sold the debt, then you may not owe anything IFAIK because you only have a responsibility to pay Barclays per contract.

      Definitely the debt needs proving first so you know you're paying the right people.

      HC - if the debt has been assigned correctly, Barclays are perfectly within their rights to assign the collection of the debt to a third party or to sell it completely as an Assignment in absolute.
