  • Cabot and me

i,m glad i joined this site. Looks like Cabot are a nasty bunch of people to come across. Well this is my experience so far. In september of last year, I had a rude phone call from a girl from Cabot, raving on about a debt I owed them. Until this call, I had never heard of the organisation, having never had a debt of any description, I was at a loss as to what she was talking about.
I then received through the mail, not 1, but 3 notices regarding to credit cards with outstanding monies exceeding £30k. My dilemma is that I have no knowledge of these debts and apparently, they have been trying to find me for the past 8 years or so.
I lived and worked in Spain for some time, coming back some 4 years ago. Prior to this, my work meant that i lived in various locations throughout the UK, never being anywhere longer than 6 to 12 months at a time.
I think I may be a victim of identity theft, as my driving licence and passport were stolen, when i renewed my HGV licence some years ago.
i am now being harrassed by these people to pay this money, in spite of my protestations that i know nothing about it. I cant prove where i lived, as I dont keep letters, bank statements etc for more than 2 to 3 years. Any ideas as to what I should do next?

    Firstly relax.
Secondly, especially as you have no knowledge of these "debts", throw a simple Prove It at Cabot. There's one in post #4 in the first link in my siggie.
While you're there have a read as well.

If they have indeed been trying to find you for that length of time then the debt is quite possibly statute barred and they CANNOT take legal action to enforce it anyway.
The Prove It should shake some things loose.

      Re: Cabot and me

my o/h has a good credit score and we haven't bothered reading her report for a while. but, when we got a copy last week it turns out that some outfit called "Cabot Financial (UK) Ltd" have plonked their address on her report under the "Useful Addresses" header. o/h has no connection with cabot (me neither) and there have been no dealings with these guys. experian have stated there is (and was) no connection and have asked for a screen print of the useful addresses tab. when I called cabot last week they refused to identify the name of their data control manager and said that they would investigate this instead and call back. they never called back. so upshot is they seem to be getting up to all sorts of mischief and I wouldn't put it past them to be behind the identity theft you suspect is going on. anyway, EVERYONE should periodically look out their credit reports to see what info is going on them, even if they don't think they have anything to worry about 'cos idiots like Cabot are out there.

If that fails ring them and ask for something to be dealt with there and then. Advise you have sent in this request and get them to email their customer relations department who will contact the vendor to supply this documents. It may take a little longer as they have to dig up archived documents to prove what they believe is neccesary. The problem is since october 2010 they no longer need to provide a signed copy of the original agreement but a true copy which basically means they can write one themselves that would have looked like the one at the time!

Not exactly like that but im sure you get the point since end of 2010 they no longer have to provide a signed credit agreement under section 77-78 cca. It doesnt make any sense to me!
