  • chelmer collections/barclays bank

Hi all, I wondered if anyone can give me some advice please.
The situation is that I had a loan and overdraft with barclays bank, although it was difficult I managed to pay the full amount on time every month, then my hours were reduced at work and barclays agreed that I was in financial hardship and sent me a letter stating this and they also said they still wanted full payment for the loan and overdraft. Because I was struggling I sought advice from debtline and they advised me to open a basic account with another bank and then to pay what I could afford to barclays by standing order and at the same time write to barclays again informing them of what I was proposing to pay. I did all this but barclays have now passed my debt to chelmer collections and they state they are sending a debt collector to my door and that the arrears are due immediately. This whole situation has made me ill. Barclays have bombarded me with phone calls up to 10 times a day. I also moved address 4 months ago and despite me writing to them telling them my new address they still write to where I lived previously. Please help I am at my wits end. Many thanks

You need to send them a harrassment letter

Other will pop in soon to give advice, but I would get a harrassment letter off as soon as possible one that suits your situation as there are several to chose from.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I have already sent Barclays an harassment letter several months ago, in it I asked them to stop phoning me and to only contact me in writing, I also pointed out that it was them who agreed in writing that I was suffering financial hardship and i put a copy of it in with the letter. The response I got from them was yet another phone call wanting to discuss this.

Had a least NINE phone calls on Saturday when I checked it was from Barclay card, I do have an account which I am paying an agreed amount and had already informed them that this months would be late as I had to pay mortgage and council tax.
Did phone them back but very cross as the person I spoke to had limited English and actually came back to me after a period on hold speaking in ? dialect
Going to write to them again re harassment

You need to send this letter to Chelmer Collections, these are now the people who are harrassing you.

You have to take charge of this and not let them dictate to you. They have no power over you whatsoever. Only a court can order you to do something.

Firstly, the phone calls. BT have a Choose to Refuse service which you have to pay for but you can block numbers calling you. Better still is Trucall - a bit pricey but that blocks all unsolicited calls without your phone ringing.

Barclays cannot get blood out of a stone, no matter how much they might want to. You can only pay your essential bills and what is left over is for your creditors - it is not for them to dictate how much this will be and it is not negotiable. You decide how much you can afford and tell them that is what they are getting and pay it.

You cannot change your situation so think of the worst case scenario and don't let them worry you. If they decided to take you to court, they wouldn't get any more than you have offered anyway because no judge will make you pay more than you can afford. Barclays know that a judge wouldn't be too pleased if they took you to court when you were already paying them a regular amount that was all you could afford and would take a dim view of court proceedings in the current climate when so may people have had their hours cut. So the judge orders you to pay £1 a month and you all go home for tea. Relax- Barclays cannot hurt you.
