Hi there, a couple of months ago my partner received a letter from a debt collection agency (LCS) on behalf of HMRC, stating that she owes them nearly £22,000 in unpaid VAT. However she has never owned or had any connection to any business or company of any kind. She has contacted HMRC who stated it looked 'suspicious' and said it was related to a plumbing business! They were to be honest pretty vague but did say they would look into it. LCS were informed of this, but decided to send another letter anyway stating that HMRC confirm the debt is still outstanding. Nobody seems to want to tell us exactly what the debt is for. Normally I would not be that worried but as this involves HMRC it is very worrying and obviously I'm concerned about bailiffs getting involved. Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Go back to HMRC. Do this in writing. Get their reply in writing. Send the reply to LCS. In the meantime tell LCS (nicely) that this is nothing to do with you.Lawyer (solicitor) - retired from practice, now supervising solicitor in a university law clinic. I do not advise by private message.
