  • Global Recovery Alliance help

    Hello,

Two years ago I received an emergency in the USA, Unfortunately, the holiday insurance was cancelled and we were not covered. Our bill has come to approximately $33,000. We were contacted by a representative from Global Recovery Alliance which appears to be based in Switzerland asking about payments as soon as we received the bill upon return in the UK. We notified them and the hospital that we were disputing the insurance.
Fast forward to day, the dispute with insurance went to the financial ombudsman and it wasn't successful, so we have now began to receive the bill again from the hospital. I asked for an itemized bill to see about fair costing.
Unfortunately now, there is no way of communicating the hospital by email. They prefer to use their app, which is US only or contact by phone (which for record reasons isn't preferred).
Now Global Recovery Alliance have contacted us again asking if the dispute with the insurance has been settled.
Legally, where do I stand with this? I
'm a UK resident and there is very little help regarding this type of issue/fair costing of US medical bills. The last thing I want is to deal with an external debt collection company and going to court.

    Hi SICARI

    Welcome to LB

The FOS isn't renowned for 'fairness', do you believe the 'outcome to be 'unfair'?

    Did you 'appeal' the decision?

The way the FOS is funded is that the insurance company pays the FOS to look into your complaint, so 'outcomes' can be 'wishy, washy'.

There will likely be a similar case, check how it was 'decided'.

      Hello EChat11,

We unfortunately have passed the deadline for appeal and thought it wasn't worth it due to the evidence we already had being dismissed for consideration if were to appeal.

If you believe that the FOS should of found in your 'favour', then there is no harm in 'pursuing' it with them (even if the Appeal deadline has passed), the FOS are 'masters at batting stuff away.

That's good to know regarding pursuing after the deadline.
Have you got any advice or guidance regarding Global Recovery Alliance?

Write to them, explain that you are still awaiting information from them.

Explain that the 'cost of living' crisis is effecting you and others. Explain that the Financial Conduct Authority has produced guidelines for Creditors, so they have to take care when collecting debts.

Why were you not insured - why was it cancelled? Is there anything about that decison that can be questioned again?
