I was alarmed recently to find a marked default placed on my file by Churchill Car Insurance two years ago. I had been setting up insurance with them and was trying to get my wife added to the policy. Because she is non-UK born, they wouldn't entertain it so I cancelled the policy. Somehow, they have managed mark a default for the princely sum of £35! How do I get this removed?

I would write to them, explain what's happened, why it's unfair and it's hampered your ability to get credit, explain that if it isn't removed you will lodge a complaint with the FOS which will cost them £500 plus if the FOS looks into you complaint. Further you will lodge a complaint with the FCA. Make sure you get Proof of Postage.
Also you can add notes to your Credit File with an explanation. Companies can read the notes, will help in future decision making regards your credit worthiness.
