  • Natwest told my energy supplier I was dead!

    Hi, can anyone advise please?
NatWest returned my direct debit unpaid to EDF with the reason given as 'Account Holder Deceased'. I then started to receive letters from EDF addressed to my Executors. I complained initially to EDF as I assumed it was their mistake. They told me it was Natwest so I complained on October 16th and had the usual acknowledgement letter.
What should I expect from them in the way of an apology for declaring me to be dead? I think it's hilarious by the way but, if I had a terminal illness it would be devastating. I do, however, lead an almost intolerably stressful life due to caring for an adult with a chronic illness (and I have 3 kids) and this has been yet one more ridiculous thing to deal with. What would you expect, any thoughts?
    Many thanks for reading

Lol as funny as it may be, what Natwest has done amounts to libel. For which you should seek considerable damages, for embarressment and distress caused, not to mention inconvience and effect it may have had on your energey supply and time it has taken for you to deal with the matter and have it corrected.

Where you able to use your bank cards, access your bank account and use the hole in wall, or where they blocked too?

Yes it didn't affect anything else funnily enough. I assume that a clerk just hit a wrong button. Libel really? I hadn't even thought of that!

Yep any written statement stated as fact to a 3rd party, when it is not a fact at all (i.e. untrue), is libel! The fact it caused you embarrassment and distress (despite you finding it funny later) means your entitled to claim if you wished to for damages. Though they will likely give you a good will payment anyway.

If the Direct Debit was returned unpaid due to insufficient funds then the bank has erroneously keyed in the reason code as payee deceased. It is a typing error but also it is a serious one since a company receiving such information assumes that the payee is deceased so will send a bill to the executors of the estate. I would expect them to compensate you for the embarrassment and furthermore for the inconvenience of having to deal with the fact that your electricity company believed that you were deceased. As Mark Twain wrote: "news of my death has been greatly exaggerated!!!"

Technically they have made no statement as such to EDF but have returned an item with the BACS code for "payee deceased". As I have written I think it was done in error however as you have said it is inconvenience and embarrassment that has resulted and therefore I think monetary compensation is in order.

Writer a letter of complaint to the CEO Stephen Hester of NATWEST that is the quickest way of getting your complaint sorted. Perhaps someone will actually be able to give you his exact email address.

I also remember one of members also had something similar and 3 times his records were marked as deceased and he got paid out 3 times compensation.

Check your credit history. This is one of those stupid blunders that can actually have very serious repercussions.

Perhaps, in the light of such serious blunders, NatWest should consider changing their name to PratWest or, even, TwatWest.

                  DUPLICATE POST. PLEASE REMOVE.

Re: Natwest told my energy supplier I was dead!

Am not sure why the CEO is listed as Les Matheson for NatWest since he is head of products and marketing. Definitely NOT someone I would email.
I think that stephen hester email is better: Stephen.Hester@rbs.co.uk

Bluebottle, when I worked for the bank and was on all the available forums, which I don't do these days, I could but roll my eyes when I saw things like CrapWest etc, etc,. I still do today, lol!

My mistake - sincere apologies to Tuttsi and OP. I used the list of CEO's and in my hurry did not look at the title, just copied the e-mail. I know Leclerc uses the same site:

                        http://www.ceoemail.com/

I have never before come across one where it's not just the CEO listed.

Apologies once again, obviously not a good day yesterday!
