  • Santander and mortgage penalty charges

Can anyone advise me on current situation regarding penalty charges levied on a mortgage account e.g. failed direct debit, taking direct debit on incorrect date etc

Can these charges be reclaimed? If so is this best done by court?

I have £700 of them with Santander - have written to them without any meaningful response

Hi Mel. Are these charges which were debited from your actual mortgage account - or charges debited to your bank account - but in connection with the mortgage account ?

Also - worth checking - was there any Payment Protection Insurance in place with the mortgage account - or any other 'stand alone' insurance which may have applied ?

All the charges have been added to my mortgage account rather than debited to my bank account - I did an SAR to get the complete list

Insurance - thanks for that - hadn't even thought about it - that is something I need to check

Worth a look, perhaps. I mentioned it because we have recently been discussing the 'cause and effect' aspect in connection with PPI and 'consequential' charges. It's possibly another route toward the same goal. Another string to one's bow, so to speak.
