New bank coming to the UK soon…ish

    By Andy Dawson

Okay, so we’ve more or less established the fact that all banks are venal scum, each of them racing to make more billions of profit than their rivals, while knocking the common man (or ‘customer’) to the floor and/or gutter with a sharp stab of the heel of their shiny jackboots. In essence, anyone who doesn’t hate their bank is either rich or mad or both.
So we’re curious, sceptical and frankly, afraid of a brand new bank that is threatening to launch in the UK, one that is already urging us to ‘love’ it in some teaser poster ads that are cropping up hither and thither.
They’re called Metro Bank and are planning to open 200 branches in the UK, starting in early 2010. They’re the brainchild of US entrepreneur Vernon Hill, founder of Commerce Bankcorp, which prides itself on its customer service and operated a business model based on that of Burger King when it started out in the 1970s.
The new Metro Bank are said to be placing a similar emphasis on customer service with branches open until late, seven days a week. One snag – they still haven’t got a licence to operate in the UK.
    Oh. Bugger.

And Tesco operating Current accounts from next year.

Tesco Bank to offer current accounts and small business banking
      October 29, 2009
      By Caroline Johnson

Current accounts, small business banking facilities and mortgages are to be offered by Tesco's new full-service bank.

However, bosses at the supermarket chain ruled out a bid to take control of Northern Rock as they spoke about the newly-named financial institution, which already holds nearly four million insurance and savings customers and eight per cent of UK-issued credit cards.

Chatting to the Guardian about the retail giant's new customer service centre in Newcastle upon Tyne, set up to give sales and claims advice to motor insurance policyholders, chief executive Benny Higgins explained that current accounts with Tesco Bank - formerly known as Tesco Personal Finance - will be offered from next year.

Mortgages will be introduced at the same time and small business banking services will follow.

For customers interested in the bank's current accounts, he pointed out that there is likely to be a small monthly fee, but Clubcard loyalty points will be given to those who use their debit card.

"There is a real gap in the market to look after customers in a simple, straightforward way and reward their loyalty," he explained. "In financial services, being simple and straightforward is not common.

I also heard that Virgin were interested in taking over and running some of the parts that will be released when both RBS and Lloyds-TSB are broken up into smaller parts.

Well lets just hope that any new bank set up is indeed better than the old set, by way of looking after their customers.

Lets just hope that the new banks, if they succeed in opening take heed of the
the FSA and the PCA report.

            that link is useful.

Knew I was better off transferring from A&L to cahoot - even if they are part of the same group:tinysmile_grin_t:

A&L are VERY good at just ignoring letters as well. On the whole I have found cahoot much more helpful(comparitively speaking only . they are not perfect)
