  • RBS - I'm trying not to laugh

RBS and their automated systems have in the past been in equal measure a source of amusement and despair to me.

This morning's letter from their Mortgage Centre has got to top the lot though.

I pay by Standing Order each month, and never bothered to lower my payments when the interest rate reduced a while back. So I was taken aback to get this...

We write following a review of your mortgage account.

The oustanding amount on your mortgage account is £-501.38. Please forward a cheque for the full amount... etc, etc
How on earth do they expect me to send a cheque for a MINUS amount?

Time to add this to my ever growing list of complaints. No wonder they are in the mess they're in.

I know but I daren't say cos I would only get myself in trouble. Mortgage accounts work in minus figures since it is borrowing money.

EDIT: damn it, I said it.

Errrmmm. So are you saying that they think I actually OWE them 500 odd quid Nattie?

Which would place my complaint into a whole new league altogether if you are. Since I have been overpaying for quite some time now.

Just phoned them up. They definitely wanted me to send a cheque for a minus amount. Apparently your account is reviewed automatically every so often, and if the balance doesn't tally with what it reckons it should be, it kicks a template out.

As the Nice Mr Ronnie said... computers have no common sense.

Neither, it seems, do the folks who write the software either. A simple bit of code would have told it not to generate the letter if there is a minus in the figure. But then, I'm just a humble hardware man. What do I know about the weird and wonderful so-called logic of programmers?
