  • Abbey asking to confirm contact details on-line

Over the last few days when logging on to our account I've noticed the following notice

    IMPORTANT MESSAGE PLEASE READ
Over the coming days, you will be asked to update or confirm your contact details after you logon to Abbey.com. It is important we have the most up to date contact details for you, so if there is a problem with your account, or a transaction that we need to confirm, we can be in contact as quickly as possible.

This appears after I've entered security password/numbers.

About a week ago a page actually appeared asking me to confirm the above before I'd seen this notice. I panicked thinking someone was after me dosh so logged off pretty smartish without checking exactly what they wanted me to confirm.

I'm going to ring them tomorrow to check but just wondered if anyone else had been asked to confirm details online.

    Hi CJ

I will check my Abbey account latter.

I encountered a situation when I did my car road tax on line and it stated you are entered for a free draw for a new car. I thought why not and it asked me to click further.....

I was then asked a series of questions and then I got a warning message up on my computer screen saying that this was an unauthorised site! so I shot out of it pretty quickly.

So this is really bad if peeps have hacked into a governement site.

Yes, I have done and have been quite happy not to give details because I know I can update them over the phone/in the branch or by post.

Just rang them and they've confirmed it is an official message and that apparently they need to check details every 12 months to ensure they are up to date.

Mind you first time I've seen it.

Natwest do a similar thing with their online banking. I never update my email address, the less they know the better!
          Is no longer here

Watch out the crooks are highjacking calls to the banks. They send you a message via email or even text asking you contact them then when you phone your bank unbeknown to you your call is diverted electronically to (because they already have your tel no) the fraudsters who request your details which you readily give thinking your talking to your bank when your most certainly not

Please GO to your branch rather than use the phone OR the internet. Remember banks will not ask for pin or pass words at ANY time

As afar as i am aware the banks do not ask for confirmation of informaiton online or via the telephone. I further belive that they never ask you to confrim you pin number of security information online.

I am not sure of the ease with which phone calls can be re-directed, but if you have any doubts go to the branch as righty says.

Update I haven't confirmed whether details(Telephone No. & email address) are correct or not. If the page appears I just log off and on again and shall continue to do so.

Watched BBC iPlayer - You and Yours: 20/05/2009 as suggested in righty's other post

I think the BBC You and Yours link should be part of the sites header in order to warn ALL users of this site

Re: Abbey asking to confirm contact details on-line

                      Just tried to sign on to on line banking and the following popped up;

                      What is One Time Passcode?

At Abbey, we take the security of your money and your identity very seriously. One Time Passcode (OTP) is an additional security measure providing you greater online banking protection.
                      How does it work?

For example, when you wish to transfer funds to another account, we will send a passcode to your mobile via SMS text message. Simply enter this code on the transfers page to authorise and complete your transfer. It's that simple and it's free.
Why do I need to register?

OTP is mandatory to complete a number of online transactions including payments, transfers and changes to your personal details. Once registered, you will benefit from additional protection against fraud using leading technology giving you peace of mind. By not registering now, you will be at greater risk of online fraud and that you will not be able to complete certain transactions online.
                      How do I register?

Simply click on the "Register now" button below to begin registration. You will be asked to enter your mobile phone number so please have that to hand. That's it!
                      Remember

Abbey will never send you an email asking you to enter your Online Banking details or asking you for any personal information. If you have received a scam email, do not click on any links or pictures, or open any attachments. Instead, please forward it to phishing@abbey.com and help us reduce online fraud.

anyone got any views on this?

Phone Abbey & check this looks mighty suspicious. WE bank with Abbey on line & it's the 1st we have known about this

I've checked the F&Q's and it states that this is the equivalent of the number generators supplied by Nationwide etc. But will look into it further.

Has anyone got information regarding One Time Password, is it genuine or not ?.
If its a fraud i would like to know, i tried to contact Abbey but all sorts of problems in trying to contact Customer Service Advisor so had to leave it for now.

Re: Abbey asking to confirm contact details on-line

Just found this on a thread on MSE which seems to confirm the new One Time Password is a new security measure.

                              HERE

Well I still won't be registering as:

                              1) I haven't got a mobile phone for them to send the password too &

                              2) the signal here is hit & miss so it would most probably not get through anyway.

Will just have to see what effect it has on my banking.
Existing payment arrangements seem to be unaffected as I made a payment this morning without any problems. So I'm assuming I won't be able to set up any new payments or alter any existing payments.

                              Time will tell
