Why is it when I go into my bank. I am hassled by the cashier wanting to know who I have my mortgage, insurance etc with, and then given a sales pitch into could the give me a quote to see if the can do it cheaper. Alls I want to do is pay my bills or withdraw some money. I do not want to be hassled in this way

Just tell them that then. They are only doing their jobs, they all have targets for new business.

If that fails, I find that announcing (in quite a loud voice) that I can't actually afford any house/car/mortgage/whatever because the bank has taken zillions of quids worth of punitive charges from me, so I can hardly afford to eat, works every time.

or you could try the " I only have this bank account because its the only one I can get, do you really think I would want to maximise your profits any more, i wouldn't take any more of your products unless you paid me to take them" line. But say it nicely cos it's not the cashier's fault that he/she works for such a money grabbing, non caring, greedy institution, is it, the poor lamb?
    Is no longer here

Or I could say I know you are being pushed my the man upstairs to sell your products and make the banks huge profits. But if the man upstairs did his job properly I wouldn't be faced with a huge tax bill to bail him out.

        Re: banks

Showergirl, it depends whether your perspective is selling you a product or saving you money.
If you are paying a whole load of credit cards and spending £500 on them and you take out a loan that reduces it to £300(NO PPI) and you cut up your credit cards(THAT BIT SHOULD BE MANDATORY IMHO) that means you have £200 more in your pocket. Am I selling that to you or saving you money?
Unfortunately, people do stick their head in the sand, ie the Ostrich, when the solution could make their lives easier. Not saying it will do for people but you will be amazed how many people do not go to MSE or do not see comparison sites.

My theory on this type of thing is
If I want chips, I will go to the Chippy.
I dont expect the Chippy to call me at tea time to ask if I want some chips today

            Re: banks

But if the chippy is having a sale on and is throwing in Fish, if he fails to tell you but tells your friend and when you go back they are not offering free fish, would you not feel annoyed that he failed to save you money for cod and chips which you would have to pay full price for now where before you would not have? Of course, you are free to go without the fish of course

BTW if you don't want the chippy to ring you then you register for the Telephone Preference System

              Re: banks

Yes, but i stated I only wanted chips, not fish and chips, so wouldn't matter whether fish was free or not.

As a side issue, i did get a free fish a couple of weeks ago from my chippy.
