  • Where can we bank now we are Bankrupt?

A few weeks ago my wife and I were made bankrupt however we are hoping it will be annulled in due course in the meantime Nat West have had a knee jerk response and closed the account. My wife had a £1200 facility which has now been removed on the same day her wages were paid in needless to say we have no money as everything is frozen and the overdraft has been cleared we have two young children think of.
So our Child credit payments will be returned and we don't have an account to redirect too.
Any help would as always be much appreciated at this moment in time.
    Thank you Top1

You should also look at this http://www.insolvency.gov.uk/pdfs/gu...ankaccount.pdf from the Insolvency Service.
A Post Office card account and pre-paid debit cards are other options, besides basic bank accounts.

        Hi

I am not knowlegdable on bankruptcy at all , but is there a credit union operating in your area , you could have a face to face meeting with a union representative

They help people concerning there own personal circumstances

A basic Barclays account (as said in the MSE link) is the only major mainstream option.

Barclays should, even if you included debts to them in the bankruptcy, open you a new account. You won't be allowed internet or phone banking until discharged though.

And if you did owe money to Barclays, they are not allowed to set off against funds that go into that account after your bankruptcy date, so you should be safe operating a new account there.

Co-op do a basic account for bankrupts as well as Barclays but they were on about stopping them due to it being unfair that the other banks weren't made to shoulder some of the responsibility. I found a cash plus gold pre paid mastercard as a god send and more versatile than a basic account, I am sure others are available. The insolvency service should give you access to funds for living on so make sure that if the wages went in after bankruptcy they are entitled to keep them because the insolvency service should have stopped the account from being used and any overdraught should have been included in your bankruptcy estate, it isn't the nat west's money to keep either if it was after the bankruptcy. The pre-paid card I mentioned can be set up online and you can have wages paid into it and also do direct debits and standing orders from it so it might be the quickest method to get yourself up and running but you really need to talk to the insolvency service about whether you should be allowed access to your wages.

Yes, Co-op stopped allowing undischarged bankrupts to open basic accounts from September 17, 2012.
