O.k the inland revenue are usless, if you have ever received a self assesment, then until the tax office writes to you and says, you will no longer receive a tax return then you are liable, if you changed address, or changed job tuff titties.
The tax man is the one person you pay, or give a good reason why you ain't paying.
The only way you are going to get out of it is by appealing, and proving you have not earnt what they say or think you have earnt.
If they don't agree, agree a payment plan, or you could go to prison.
The tax man is the bloke with greased back hair and john lennon glasses who has never had a good night out, has never had sex, and if you offer him a fag, he will do you for bribing an official.
So if you can prove you do not owe the money, pay it then ask for it back.

I've actually always found the Inland Revenue incredibly helpful. Sure, nobody likes paying tax, but if you phone them for help, they will try their best to resolve any issues for you. Also if you are unable to fill in your tax form for any reason, they will do it with you and they will make sure you claim absolutely everything you are entitled to in order to minimise your bill.

They do have scary powers, so you'll either need to back up your claim from post 3, or, as previously mentioned, it's best to pay now, then argue to get it back.

I have actually known the Revenue to get it wrong when helping someone with their tax return and then charging them huge penalties etc. An example of this is Frisp on this site had a horrendous time with them when they helped him. The Revenue actually if they get it wrong do not stand by their work.

The alternative is to use an accountant as they can often save you money and ensure that it is done correctly. My O/H often is able to get tax refunds for people who would otherwise not have got if they did it themselves or let the revenue help them.

I agree the Revenue can be helpful but they will not save you any money as they just want to collect taxes.

Just another reminder for everyone out there - 33 days left to file a self assessment tax return.

I guess this is another case of everyone having their own experiences. I have had tax returns filled in by them, and my father has to do this every year. I also know a couple of other people who use this facility, and in all cases they save the person as much as they possibly can.

It would appear that some do their jobs diligently, while others just try to maximise the money they can get from you.
