  • Bankruptcy - your experience.

    Hi All,

I am seriously considering declaring myself bankrupt.

I have just under £19k of debts, including a CCJ, council tax & benefit over payment (not fraudulently I might add).
These are all unsecured. I am a tenant (rent is not in arrears and tenancy would be ok.
I have no assets of any worth and my budget has nothing excessive in it but still leaves us in a minus each month, my job would also be secure.

I had to change jobs so my pay has dropped considerably so although we are not currently living above our means these debts are mounting up each month hanging over my head and last week I received my 1st CCJ.

My wife and I discussed an IVA (which to me feels like trying to put out a house fire by spitting on it), a DRO (which stepchange seem to think I'm not entitled to).

I have had the worst year including the loss of my mother, I just want to put this part of my life to bed and at least get a bit of stress released.

I really don't feel like I've got anything to lose but my wife is concerned whilst were in the 12 month bankruptcy period, every penny we spend will be scrutinised and accounted for so "no anniversary meal" or anything like that.

Anyone on here gone through it? Was it better or worse than you thought?

Any advice or thoughts gratefully received.
