I am so very glad that you found the courage to go to court and get it all sorted out.
It's a great result, and the sort of thing that we on LB are pleased to hear.
The judge should be commended for making such a sensible decision in reducing your debt to £75.00
Providing you stick to the agreement to pay £5.00 a week, you should be clear before Christmas.

Believe it or not, a lot more judges and Justices of the Peace appear to be exercising commonsense as well as being less accepting of what they are told by the police, in criminal cases, and claimants, in civil cases. A case at a magistrates court in Cornwall last year highlighted this when a bench of three JPs took just under an hour to throw out a case involving a certificated bailiff who had made a false allegation against a debtor he had been harassing. It turned out Plymouth Magistrates Court had wrongly issued a distress warrant, withdrew it as soon as the error was discovered, but this did not prevent the bailiff from continuing to threaten the debtor with locksmiths and demanding money that was being recovered by way of a pre-existing Attachment of Benefits Order. The debtor is now suing the bailiff, civil enforcement company and police.

The entire Magistrate Court fines system is due to be radically changed in the next few months and an entirely new computer system will be installed by the new HMCTS 'private partner'. Hopefully such administration errors will be drastically reduced. We can but hope......

However....all debtors will suffer as the all court fines will have an additional 'court fee' attached to it as well. We are awaiting details of the actual amount but we do know that the sum will be LESS for those who respond to the summons and MORE for those who ignore it.

More worryingly, close to one million court fines will be handed down in a specialist 'court' similar to the Traffic Enforcement Centre where only one Magistrate will oversee the fines and where debtors will not be able to attend in person. If the debtor chooses to have their day in court this will still be permitted but it is thought that these will be few and far between (leaving Magistrate Courts for more serious cases).

If is generally accepted that LESS cases will result in bailiffs and the collection of fines will instead be the focus of the new private partner's in house debt collection teams.

What you are describing, Milo, is Napoleonic Law which is completely at odds and contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights (aka Rome Convention 1953) and other human rights conventions. Be in no doubt that conventions are International Law and supersede the domestic law of countries that are signatories to the conventions, that is, their domestic law is subservient and not superior to International Law.

This current shower in Westminster and the last shower have been sliding in Napoleonic Law, first through the seizing of goods by Customs, then the seizing of vehicles by DVLA and the police, then the dishing out of Fixed Penalty Notices by police and assorted jobsworths. Napoleonic Law presumes guilt, not innocent until proven guilty, which is the main cornerstone of most legal systems around the world.

If the ConDems sign and ratify the Treaty of Nice, in November, what you describe will become a reality and the UK will become more like Eastern Europe was during the communist years. This is not conspiracy theory; this is the view of a lot of very well-educated people, some of them doctors and professors of law, and legal professionals. Police officers are getting very worried, too. This became evident during a conversation I had recently with some officers from my local station whom I am on good terms with.

We should all be very worried about what you are reporting, Milo, and do everything to ensure the UK does not sign and ratify the Treaty of Nice. Everyone needs to badger their MP and put pressure on them to do as they told by the people and not what the MPs think is best or the criminal cabal in the City of London whom, it is clear, is exerting far too much influence on public policy and engaging in an orgy of criminal behaviour involving the illegal seizure of people's land and homes, think is best. If we don't we are all stuffed.

Unless and until all these proposals are made known, and fully explained to the common people (and I use that term very lightly), these will slip into legislation by the back door.
What the hell has happened to the British Legal System, when we allow this sort of thing to happen.
Without a doubt, traitor Cameron and his arse licking sidekick Nick Clegg, will give away another piece of our heritage.
More of our rights to justice and a fair hearing will disappear into the realms of European legislation.
The City Of London is the power in this country, and they will have their own way, until the people revolt, as will surely happen.

It's down to us, the people, to tell the politicians, "Enough is enough. We are the masters, not the servants." There is a march from Jarrow to London this month in support of the NHS. It is anticipated that by the time it reaches London, in early September, there will be nigh on 1 million people descending on the capital. The police will not be able to cope with the influx. Even if they had every police officer in the UK in London. the people would outnumber them and, probably, overwhelm them and overpower them. The rumblings in the jungle are that the police are likely to turn on the politicians and, probably, so will the armed forces. Any politician who thinks they can treat police and armed forces badly and expect obedience and protection is living in a fantasy world. The only ones who will protect them are those who are as psychopathic and sociopathic as they are. Don't rule out a general election later this year yet.

If only.......... The rumblings in the jungle are coming from one of the bodies the ConDems think they can shat on and get away with it, which includes the police, armed forces and legal profession. (Clue: It is one of the three mentioned.)
