  • Bristow Sutor council tax

Hi, sorry but I'm new here.

My partner has had a bailiff letter from Bristow Sutor regarding council tax from eleven years ago when she was with a previous partner. The letter is addressed to both of them, demanding money for an un-paid council tax bill. He moved out eleven years ago and now lives in Devon somewhere. She has no earnings as she is a housewife and does not work, but he does. I'm not paying the bill, so what do we do? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

The problem that you have here is that your partner will be jointly liable for this account. The council are entitled to pursue any or all named parties.

The letter that you have received will have probably cost you an extra £75. The fact that your partner does not have an income will not stop the EA attending your property with a view to take control of goods to secure against the debt. This will cost an additional £235

Unfortunately, with this type of debt, it never goes away and usually, the longer that it is left, the worst the problem becomes. I don't really see an alternative other than to address the matter. It is vital that you contact B&S at the earliest opportunity and offer to enter into a payment plan. Do not be bullied into allowing them to visit you in order to set one up as they will probably charge you the £235 for the privilege. Follow your offer up in writing & copy in the council.

If you know where he is, you could try sorting something out amicably but neither the council nor B&S care about the rights & wrongs here-They just want the money.
