  • Not sure if it was a bailiff!

    Hi

Well, today, while my husband was out, I heard someone knock on the door (with that metal thing) very loudly, and usually I do not answer the door while my husband is not in, but because they knocked so hard, I decided to go and look through the hole in the door;I saw a stranger with some paperwork in hand and while I was wondering (a few seconds) if it was a door to door seller or maybe the gas and electricity person and if I should open the door or not, he looked through the letterbox and of course saw me, or the lower part of me, as I was still looking through the door hole and he said in an intimidating tone, "I see you, open the door!" and I did and he asked about a person which I don't know and obviously doesn't live here (he did not identified himself or where he was from) and I said, No, then he said the person's full name and I said, doesn't live here, then he asked when had he moved and I said, I don't know; I don't know who he is; then he asked since when I lived here and I told him the exact date (a year ago) then he asked if I was registered with Newcastle council and I said no, I am registered with Gateshead council; then he looked a little bit confused and then said Newcastle council did not have that information and I said that's because I am registered with Gateshead council and not Newcastle; finally he asked my name and I told him and he said he was going to inform the council (Newcastle) and we will see. I don't know if he is a bailiff but he did not identified himself and he only asked about a person which really I don't know and he was intimidating and I don't think he is allowed to look through my letterbox, any advice? Thanks.

Keep a water pistol with soap solution in it at the back of the door.

If he starts peering through your letterbox again, you can squirt suds in his eyes.

If anything similar happens again, remember to ask for ID - lock him out while you go inside to check it. If you have any doubts, do not give your name to any stranger.

If you have a Neighbourhood Watch or Community Policeman it would be worth mentioning it to them.

Did he put any papers or a letter through the letterbox?

It doesn't sound like it from the fairly detailed description in the OP's post, but good to check and have it 'from the horse's mouth'.

I would be inclined to report this incident to the police, especially as this person was asking for personal details and did not identify themselves. Those who commit offences of Burglary Artifice, more commonly-known as Distraction Burglary, will frequently claim to be officials or give the impression they are acting in some official capacity. If there are any elderly persons living nearby, then reporting the matter to the police would be advisable. Distraction burglars see the elderly as easy prey.

AGREE next door knocked on might be a different result call the police get it on record and hopefully investigated

In my experience, old washing up liquid bottles are better - they don't leak.

                    Yes.

It doesn't spatter blood over the door.

I'd go with BB, ring the police with a Bogus Official report on the guy, if he was a bailiff and they pull him over tough, goes with the territory, but if it was a conman, a job well done.

Thanks all, and he did not put any papers through the letterbox or gave me any, before or after the visit.

Then the bailiff if it is one cannot claim a visit, as no proof left.
