  • council tax and Bristow and souter

Hi I just wondered if anyone had any ideas on what I should do next.

I have recently registered at a new address and the council sent me a letter stating i owed outstanding council tax from a rented house back in 2007.

I did not advise them that i had moved out and in with friends/family so they have said i am liable to pay the outstanding balance

I wrote and called the council to say that I was a tenant and had moved out and i gave them the landlady’s address, they would not contact her as it is down to me to pay. (£1,300) i have agreed to pay for 2 months as I was living in the property and didn’t pay.

They have said the only paperwork they will accept is bank statements with a change of address dated but my mail was re directed for 6 months so I don’t have this or a new tenancy agreement. I explained I can’t get this information as I moved in with family/friends.

Is it not down to the owner of the property?

In the meantime Bristow and Souter have been to my new address and left a letter, i have called them and started making payments to them; I went home yesterday to find another letter saying they will come back another time to reclaim goods.

I have tried all that I can and am at a loss now, any help would be great.

    Thank you

They can't do that unless they have gained peaceable entry to your home on a previous occasion and not without having obtained a valid and lawful levy or have an order signed in ink by a judge. If none of these apply, they can be told to Foxtrot Oscar if they turn up on your doorstep. If you are making payments to them, they should not be resorting to this sort of behaviour.
