Thanks for all the answers. The Bank will come back to me with the form to dispute these transactions, which I will have to sign and send back. It was a credit card so I hope this should be dealt quickly.

So far they (Barclaycard) weren't able to give me any more details except the date of transaction and name of originator (Marston).

I will come back here once I will have more details.

If it's a cloned card, as CC suggests it might be, the paper trail goes to the account holder, not the miscreant.

The other end of the paper trail would end up with the person who claimed the funds, that is whoever has the account with Marstons that has been credited (obviously)

It looks as though the sums claimed were the £20 first to see if the account was real and active. When that was successful 2 sums below the floor limit were asked for so that they did not invoke a verification process from Barclaycard. If the £750 had been asked for as one sum then Barclaycard would have invoked their verification process to see if the card holder was present. I would definitely say dodgy dealings.

Point this out to Barclaycard as symptomatic of fraudulent dealings and get the money back now.

Unfortunately the barclaycard process for fraud takes a long time, as I know only too well. I've been telephoned by Barclaycard to query some transactions and despite being told they were fraudulent the transactions were processed 2 days later. Took more than 2 months to get every refunded.

Agree, GT. However, it still needs to be established just how Marstons became involved and why.

I's be more interested in finding out from Marstons what this was for and the name of the "alleged" debtor. If they refuse to talk to you because you are not the named person then you know your card has probably been cloned.

I think you would have to be a special kind if idiot to clone a card and then spend it on something that can easily traced back.

Its possible I suppose although unlikely IMO

It's a long story, with several items. Basically Barclaycard could have saved themselves several £100's if they had acted immediately. But no, they have to send you a piece of paper to identify the fraudulent transactions which then has to be signed and returned to them by snail mail and then it is handled. AGHHHH

Just an observation, which may or may not be true, but if someone was capable of setting up a scam to clone or otherwise obtain the OP's credit card details (and presumably those of others?), then I would assume they might also be clever enough to set up a dummy bank account in the name of "Marston" to give credence to their scam? Money laundering rules aside, it doesn't seem that hard for these scammers to get around around them, and if it's that easy for a scammer, goodness knows a terrorist probably doesn't think twice!

Yes it is a point. I don't see any reason why the bank should not divulge the sort code of the destination account so that this possibility can be discounted.

Cloning of cards is frighteningly simple, Eloise. Many cards are cloned by fixing a device to an ATM which contains a data capture (which captures the cardholder's details from the magnetic stripe) and a miniature camera that films the PIN being input by the legitimate cardholder and is stored on a hard drive (similar to a flash drive or memory stick). As to setting an account in the name of Marston, if it has been set up as a business account, the bank should check the certificate of incorporation, company registration number and directors' details, amongst other details. However, you would be alarmed how lax or incompetent some banks can be about checking the details of those opening new personal and business accounts, despite anti-money laundering regulations.

Physical cloning is not necessary for this kind of transaction of course. All they would need is the information off the card, no pin.

This can be obtained several ways one of the most common being the failure of traders to destroy card information following a legitimate purchase(usually on line).

Or banks throwing out documents, containing customer details and account information without securely shredding same, where any Tom, Dick or Harry can lay their hands on it. I once found a black dustbin liner full of such documents outside the back door of a bank that backed onto the premises where I worked at the time. It just happened that as I found it, one of the local PCSOs came along with their newly-appointed Divisional Superintendent on a Meet and Greet tour of his patch. When he saw what I had found, he grinned, took the bag from me and said, "I can't wait to see their faces when I walk in with this." The PCSO came back later and told me that the bank manager's face went white as a sheet when the Superintendent walked into the bank and showed him the contents of the bin liner.

You are correct in what you say, GT, that some traders can be unbelievably careless in failing to destroy card information following a legitimate purchase by a customer.

There was a Chinese restaurant in Manchester that was in the local news a little while ago. After a meal many people throw their credit card on the waiters tray, he was taking them in the office and photo copying both sides before processing the sale. Then he was selling the copies, quite a lucrative trade.
