I didn't pay the £10 congestion charge on the day as I didn't have the cash (the reason for going into London was to attend an appointment at Great Ormond Street Hospital at short notice). I thought I would just pay the £12 fee the next day but due to the nature of the appointment it went completely out of my mind. I then received a £60 fine for not paying - head in sand syndrome occured, as I'm sure you can imagine if £10 is difficult to find £60 is even harder. This then progressed to being a £180 fine! Again more head in sand syndrome. Bailiffs have now attended my home - thankfully while we were out and the hand delivered letter states that I now have to pay £574.74. My mum advised me to call him and offer to pay in installments which I did and he basically laughed at me - "if I were to pay it £100 a month it would take me 6 months to pay and they don't work like that" I told him I would get back to him in that case.
He has just phoned me to say that he has given me a week (3 days in fact) and as I haven't called back then he has no other option but to attend my property again tomorrow and if I don't pay in full he will be adding more charges.
I don't understand I have already explained that I don't have this sort of money laying around but yet they are more than willing to make it even harder to pay. If he had just accepted the installments he would already have £100 instead of nothing!
Please help as I don't know what else to do.
(For background I have 2 young children with CRMCC - extremely nasty rare disease - hence the visits to GOSH - I explained this to Transport for London and requested that they bring back the debt from Bailiffs and allow me to pay by installments but they said no as well!)
