  • debt abroad

    Hi,

We have moved to France to start a new life, and have some credit card debt, which untill a few months ago we had no problem in paying. The debt is around £700. Unfortunately, we have hit a slight issue with money over here and at the minute are unable to pay the credit card bill, the card is a Mint card. I was actually unaware that this was not being paid until recently.

I am hoping you can give me some advice with this matter. Am I likely to be a getting a knock on my door from international bailiffs over here. We do want to sort this out, and the card is in my husbands name, but he is a very proud man, who finds it difficult to admit that we have a money issue or ask for help and advice. In fact he has no idea I am even writing this post.

Any advice with htis would be geatly appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Re: debt abroad

The usual route is that it may get passed to a debt collector who may write with various threats - non of which they will do. How old is the card, will there be any PPI or other fees on it, does the card actually have an enforceable agreement on it?

      Hi Ploddertom,
I think the card is around 8 years old. There was PPI on the card but was cancelled a long time ago then we put in a claim for this back end of last year which was successful and this was removed from the balance. I am unsure what you mean by an enforceable agreement, could you elaborate please.
      Many thanks

You can send off for a copy of the Consumer Credit Agreement you "allegedly" signed at the time, the cost of this is £1 and is sent to your card provider, they have 12 days + 2 days for postage to reply. many of these cards at these times were done through Motorway Service Areas etc and the Agreements just do not exist. If they cannot produce the agreement then put simply why should you pay, I am not advocating debt avoidance by the way. There are others who more versed in this than me and would urge you to read other threads on this matter.
