    Hi all

I am so glad i found this site i am hoping to gain some advice. I have received a letter saying the bailifs are coming round for the council tax that i owe. I am willing to pay the council tax as i have never ever missed it before. Can i ignore the bailifs and hope they give the debt back to the council. We are now getting back on our feet and i can pay around £200 a month but from what i have read it seems the bailifs want the full amount. We just have not got that kind of money. Any advice would be welcome. Thank you

Can you answer the following questions, please?

    1. Is there a legally-valid Liability Order (LO) against you?
    2. Which court granted it and when?
    3. Which local authority was the LO granted to?
    4. How much, in total, CT is owed?
    5. Which bailiff company is involved?

Provide answers to these questions and it should be easier to help you.

      Hi

Yes there is an LO it is from the magistrates court I owe £700 and it is warrington borough. I do not know when it was granted i just had the bailifs letter last week and they have not been yet. To be honest when we fell on hard times my husband lost his job then i got made redundant I buried my head in the sand and i did not open letters. I have only just stopped legal action with the mortgage company. I paid the arrears off and we do not have the whole amount to pay the bailifs. My husband got another job and we are trying to get back on top. Thank you for your help

Have you checked with the magistrates court to see if they did, in fact, grant Warrington Borough Council an LO? It is not unknown for local authorities to be just as economical with the truth as certificated bailiffs. If you haven't checked, speak to the Court Manager tomorrow morning. If it transpires there is no valid LO in existence, the bailiffs can go swivel. Could you advise which bailiff company is involved, please?

The answer is straightforward. You do not have to have anything to do with the bailiffs at all. You just need to stop them having anything to do with you by avoiding levies on vehicles etc...

I'd write to the council (Head of Revenues) setting out your repayment proposals, ideally paying everything by March 31st next year, and consider copying in your MP just in case, and your local councillor if any good.

Getting there thanks! I'll be popping in occasionally, but nothing like I was for the moment.
