  • An unexpected visit!!

Hi, I hope you can help with my situation. Two months ago I received a letter from Rossendales advising that I owed £400 for unpaid council tax 2009'2010. The letter stated that I should ring their office to make payment. I rang the number as listed on the letter. I was then told that my 'case' had been referred to a bailiff and that I should speak directly to him. Rossendales sent me a text with the bailiffs mobile number. I contacted the bailiff immediately. He stated that he had no idea who I was and that I was not on his file?? He asked if the number I was calling from was mine. I advised him that it was and was told that he would call me back next week. I heard nothing from him, until today. My fiance was at home all day with our 7 month old daughter. She nipped out at 3pm to her mother's and returned at 4pm. Upon her return she found a 'Bailiff Removal' letter hanging out of our letter box. The letter was dated 19th April, exactly a week ago. It stated that £407.90 was payable within 24 hours and no further arrangements would be considered. My fiance was deeply distressed by this and was terrified that this man would return and seize our possessions. I understand that these people cannot forcibly gain entry. I have not yet contacted the bailiff, given that he has not returned my first call and has now effectively lied on the removal letter!!! My fiance and I would appreciate any advise you can give. Incidently, the debt is solely in my name and is not in question. I just don't have the resources to pay it off in one go.

Are you behind with your council tax as advised by your local council?

Do you know that it is only you named on the Liability Order because council tax debt is joint several?

The outstanding amount is from a previous address under the jurisdiction of a different council. I lived alone at my previous address.
