  • Advice for mother receiving debt letters for son

    Hi there,
My poor mother is receiving letter after letter from various bailiffs or organisations chasing my brother for debts he owes.
He doesn't live at her address and has not done since 2014, but keeps using her address to obtain credit and take out vehicle insurance he cannot afford to pay the monthly repayments on. He even bought a car recently from a chap and told him he would pay him the other half of the asking price in a few days. Needless to say he didn't, and the angry seller has visited my mother asking for payment.

Can someone tell me what the best way forward is for my mother who is living on her own and constantly getting hounded with people chasing my brother for money?
He recently lost his job, he has no hope of paying back the thousands he owes. All I am concerned about is how we can stop these bailiffs coming to her address all of the time.
My brother has been temporarily housed by the council in a hotel, so it is not as if we can give an exact address, he will not answer the phone to anybody and refuses to give details of his whereabouts. My mum has even been ringing the bailiffs he owes money to herself to tell them he isn't living at her address to save them the wasted time and fuel. Some have been very helpful and told her to send any future letters to him back to them with "not known at this address" in the envelope.

My mum had been keeping all of his post and giving it to him on the odd occasion he would drop in, however has now resorted to opening every single letter that comes addressed to him because of the volume of debt he appears to have amassed and his total lack of interest in resolving it. He is not interested in help, has the mentality that what was done yesterday is in the past and doesn't matter. Just looking for the best advice on what my mother should do to put a stop to this.
She did try and visit a local CAB office yesterday but they are all closed in our area on a Wednesday.

Any help and advice would be most grateful. We are both shocked, saddened and appalled at his disgraceful behaviour.

Are you sure it is Bailiffs and not just Debt Collectors?

Thanks for your post. Good point. It could just be Debt Collectors at the moment. But from what we have seen, he owes money to HMRC and substantial amounts of money for child maintenance payments he has never paid. He has no intention of paying anything and currently no means to do so anyway.
I am just concerned about the amount of stress my mother is having to endure for something and someone she has not racked up and does not live at her home.

All she should do is put them all back in the post marked "Not at this address". After all it is not her that owes anything.

Thanks very much. I had suggested this a few weeks back. Will pass this on.

          Thanks again.
