Another harrowing case. I have to agree that S must have a permanent and stable environment. It is almost too late to expect her to enjoy a normal and happy childhood without significant emotional scarring but if action is not taken now the damage will be far worse. I do feel a certain amount of compassion for her mother but the fact that S is exposed to volatile and unacceptable behaviour is not challenged. We all have frailties and weaknesses but this cannot be excused when they result in a vulnerable child being exposed to violence and distress.
Recent cases have revealed huge failings in the social and justice system. Following damning reports and wide media coverage I did worry about ‘knee jerk’ reactions resulting in a heavy handed approach but this case, I believe, is clear cut.

I have to say the judgement quite rightly explains a little more of Lady Hale's view that "nothing else will do" in her judgement last year. It's quite a sad case because ultimately, the placement order will, at some point in the future, if it has not happened already, sever the ties between the child and her mother(clearly has an attachment to her) until she reaches the age of maturity or 18 years of age.

I think in this judgement it is pretty clear cut, Paws. It's a sad case but I think that ultimately, from what we are aware of, it appears to be the correct course of action.
