You refer to it as "our property" so is it safe to assume that the property was/is held as Joint Tenants and/or Tenants in Common?
Either way a mortgage shouldn't (not couldn't) be taken out without permission from each of you.
A mortgage or secured loan requires a charge over the property, however some 'less scrupulous' lenders try to circumnavigate this.
May I ask what makes you suspect that a loan may have been secured on the property, and since you say this is your "ex wife" is/was there any financial agreement as part of your divorce?
