Hi everyone, my first time on this site and I'm hoping the forums will help me in my future dealings with the DWP. From what I have read it's a mine field. I called the DWP as I was unsure why I had received a letter stating that my mother may have been overpaid on her benefits after the probate had been granted. I gave them the information they required and this would be forwarded to whoever decides if anything is owed. So I await the outcome. My mother only died March this year so they are on the ball.

Re: DWP debt recovery
Hi and welcome
Sorry to hear of your mothers passing
You are right about the DWP and mine fields!
I suspect your mother was in receipt of certain benefits (pension credit?) but left an estate of a few pounds.
DWP will have picked up on that and will be checking to make sure no errors were made when she made her claim.
They do not seem to realise that elderly people often live frugally and could atuallybe saving some of their benefits.
Hopefully you will eventually (may take a little while) hearthat all is in order.
However they may say there was an overpayment which they require refunding from the estate.
In that event you either pay up, or check their figures and dispute.

Re: DWP debt recovery
Hi, thank you for responding. Yes my mother was on benefits, she was housebound really unless my brother or myself had to take her to hospital, doctors appointments or just for a run out in the car. So as you say she lived quite frugally. I wouldn't mind but she only had £12600 in her bank and 10k in premium bonds, ( we found the premium bonds after her death) plus her home. She did receive the full amount of benefit which I think is £82. We have declared what she had at all times when forms needed to be filled in so this has come as quite a Shock.
The letter did state that they would be in touch within 10 days so everything crossed. Will update when I know what is happening. Thanks once again.
