  • Hello all

    Hi

I was wondering if anyone could give me advice, I stay in scotland
I did a foolish thing, I stole a a pair of sandals £12.00 from a store today, the security gaurd stopped me before I left the shop, the manager and the store guard asked me to never to return to the store, they then asked for my car registration and said they might call the police later to get me charged. Can they do that or would they have to call the police when I was being detained. I'm worried sick and don't know how to tell my husband

        Re: Hello all

        Hi and welcome.

I doubt they will call the police in now.
If they had been so minded, they would have done so at the time.
Bearing in mind the small value it is hardly worth their time to call the law in now, especially as you would get no more than a recorded Police Warning.

        You haven't named the store.
Do you know if they utilise a "civil recovery " firm like Retail Loss Prevention?
If you should receive a threatening letter emanding money from such an outfit, just ignore it!

If you were not warned of further correspondence you will probably not hear further, but without knowing the store concerned it is not possible to be certain.

            Re: Hello all

Sainsburys in England use a firm called DWF.

I suspect you will receive a letter from this firm of solicitors demanding payment of a large sum of money towards the costs you have allegedly caused Sainsburys.

The letter will carry (veiled) threats of court action if you don't pay, and will be dressed up in legal language (well they are a firm of solicitors!)

However you can ignore the letter, and the following series. (the only correspondence one never ignores is from a court.... and you won't see that)

In spite of all they state and threaten, they will eventually cease their threats.

In the uk we have a judicial system and do not need the use of self appointed vigilantes who would act as judge, jury and executioner in pursuitof their own profit.

May I suggest you discuss the matter with your husband as you might find the concealment over a period of some months stressful.
It may be better to tell him, than have find out accidentally.
After all it wasn't the crime of the century!
